Brick-lined working barbershop leads to back-room speakeasy also featuring live music acts.

In today’s Local Deep Dive with OTG, we’ll be taking a look at High & Tight Barbershop located on 2701 Main St. Dallas, TX with Jordan Kiswani, Owner. Local Deep Dive with OTG is a weekly look into the lives and businesses of iconic local brands. In this series, we’ll try and outline the trends, best practices, and recommendations of industry insiders, trendsetters, and leaders.

Tells us about your business.
High & Tight is a take on the classic “Barbershop” Speakeasy, focusing on the love and craft of barbering and cocktails.

How long have you been in business?
High & Tight will be celebrating its 5th year anniversary this October.

How many locations and staff do you have?
Currently, we only have the Deep Ellum (Dallas, TX) location and we currently have 20+ staff.

What makes your business unique?
Our ability to operate two separate businesses within one dwelling. We don’t let the concept suffer, we continue to give Guests a true speakeasy feel from the barbershop to the cocktail bar.

How did you get your idea or concept?
I created High & Tight Barbershop because I wanted to create a real immersive experience that would stand/separate from your standard bar. The prohibition era really was a booming time for barbershops/pharmacy speakeasies. I wanted to bring that same feel from the prohibition era barbershops/pharmacy speakeasies to the modern world.

What do customers enjoy the most about your business?
I would say that customers enjoy the Barbershop and its unique bar-entry the most. Our barbershop is a full functioning shop with Master Barbers at the ready. We give Guests the best haircut or grooming experience they’ve ever had. In the back, we have a full functioning craft cocktail bar with live music playing the blues, swing and other great tunes.

What’s your most popular product, service, and or item, and when is the busiest time of the week usually?
Our most popular service would be haircuts and shaves in the barbershop, nothing beats a hot shave and a beer on the house, because with each cut we offer a free beer to adults over 21.

How do most customers discover you?
Most of our customers discover us either through our social media or walking by the shop on a busy night in the heart of Deep Ellum.

All of our Dallas-based business partners have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. While there is little any individual company can do to remove the challenging implications of the pandemic on their business, there is a lot that an individual company can do to sustain operations and continue to survive and thrive through this season.

The OTG team wants to thank High & Tight Barbershop for their transparency and engagement. We asked about how COVID-19 has impacted their business and what they are doing as a result. Jordan talked a bit about how High & Tight is combating the challenges of COVID-19.

How has COVID-19 affected your business?
Well, unfortunately, COVID-1 9 has forced us to close temporarily, but we are working hard to get doors back open so we can continue to give this city a unique experience.

What changes have you made to your business in response to COVID-19?
As of right now, we are setting up sanitation stations throughout the building and offering masks at the door if customers need them. We will continue to make necessary changes as more info comes in.

How has your physical to the digital portion of your business changed? Have you seen a significant increase in deliveries and or certain products being consumed?
We really have not had a big transition from physical to digital as of late, we have always had a strong social media platform.

Has COVID-19 affected your marketing & advertising strategy? If yes, what new ways are you reaching locals now?
COVID-19 really has shown us that we need to do more marketing outside of our normal ways, we have depended on word of mouth and local foot traffic in the area for so long, it’s time we pivot.

This concludes our weekly Local Deep Dive with OTG featuring this week’s guest Jordan Kiswanii, Owner of High & Tight Barbershop. We hope that you enjoyed this interview and can apply some of these insights to your own business. Be sure to keep track of our Local Deep Dive Series for more industry insights, recommendations, and best practices weekly with local businesses and their owners.
