In today’s Local Deep Dive with OTG, we’ll be taking a look at Halcyon located at 2900 Greenville Ave Dallas, TX with Amanda Campbell. ABOUT HALCYON

Tells us about your business.
We are a coffee shop, restaurant & cocktail bar. We are usually open 7 am to midnight every day and we invite folks to come and stay & “find your halcyon” which means your bliss, or happiness.

How long have you been in business?
Originally founded in Austin in 2002 but the Dallas location opened in April of 2017.

How many locations and staff do you have? 
We have 2 stores in Austin, 1 in Dallas, and one in San Antonio. Each location has 20 to 40 employees.

What makes your business unique?
Coffee cocktails and mimosa flights are two beloved items we serve! We also try to have a lot of fun events at night like free trivia, movie nights, or even Wine & Succulent parties once a month.

How did you get your idea or concept?
Owners Kris and John always loved the European cafe culture of being able to come and go in a lounge-like setting at any hour of the day for a coffee, cocktail or a nice bite to eat. The original Austin location is still located on 4th Street in Downtown.

What do customers enjoy the most about your business?
Guests love the open, artistic atmosphere and of course great staff! Brunch on the weekends is the busiest time of the week (it’s Dallas after all!) but free trivia on Saturday nights pulls quite the crowd as well. The Wine & Succulents party, offered every last Friday of the month, always brings lots of smiles and fun!

What’s your most popular product, service, and or item, and when is the busiest time of the week usually?
Chocolate Espresso Martini, made with fresh espresso is the most favored coffee cocktail. But even in the COVID shut down, mimosa flights, with your choice of 4 flavors, are still the best seller of the bar! Chocolate espresso shakes and fresh lemonades, like lavender lemonade, have not stopped those in quarantine!

How do most customers discover you?
We are right in the Lower Greenville neighborhood so lots of folks just walk here or attend SMU but we get our fair share of travelers too. People will always come for great coffee!



All of our Dallas-based business partners have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. While there is little any individual company can do to remove the challenging implications of the pandemic on their business, there is a lot that an individual company can do to sustain operations and continue to survive and thrive through this season.

The OTG team wants to thank Halcyon for their transparency and engagement. We asked about how COVID-19 has impacted their business and what they are doing as a result. Amanda talked a bit about how Halcyon is combating the challenges of COVID-19.

COVID-19 IMPACT & RESPONSE

How has COVID-19 affected your business? 
We have had to be flexible & started selling groceries & family meals along with our to-go food. We’ve been down about 80% in sales & had to let most of our staff go for now but hopefully, the worst is over now.

What changes have you made to your business in response to COVID-19?
We sell groceries for pickup or delivery at Halcyon@home.square.site. We’re still adding and adjusting the offerings daily and many find that picking up a box of hand-packed groceries curbside is a lot less stressful than going to the grocery store. And it helps local small businesses. It’s been great to see all the support from regulars and the community.

PATH FORWARD

How has your physical to the digital portion of your business changed? Have you seen a significant increase in deliveries and or certain products being consumed? 
We still try to post on Instagram and Facebook daily but we did have a few digital iterations of our online grocery store before the Square site. I might have accidentally deleted a Google form one of the owners spent several hours making! I also do Zoom calls with the owners once a week, and we used to only talk over the phone.

Has COVID-19 affected your marketing & advertising strategy? If yes, what new ways are you reaching locals now?
We’ve reached out to all the emails we’ve collected over our wi-fi over the past several years, investors, and as much of the neighborhood right around us too (Nextdoor). Been thanking guests a lot more in social media on a regular basis too!
