Here at Benny’s Bagels, we make bagels from scratch every day.

In today’s Local Deep Dive with OTG, we’ll be taking a look at Benny’s Bagels located at 5100 West Eldorado Parkway, Suite 104 McKinney, TX with Andrew Christy, Owner. Local Deep Dive with OTG is a weekly look into the lives and businesses of iconic local brands. In this series, we’ll try and outline the trends, best practices, and recommendations of industry insiders, trendsetters, and leaders.

Tells us about your business.
Benny’s Bagels is a family-owned New York style bagel shop. We make our bagels fresh daily the traditional way – boiled and then baked in a hearthstone oven. We also serve breakfast sandwiches, deli sandwiches, wraps, lattes, chai teas, and smoothies. We believe very strongly in giving back to our local community and support lots of local events and families in need.

How long have you been in business?
Benny’s McKinney started business in 2000. We are the third owners and have owned Benny’s McKinney for over 9 years.

How many locations and staff do you have?
We have one location with 11 employees.

What makes your business unique?
We are a family-oriented business that pride ourselves in making traditional bagels.

How did you get your idea or concept?
We purchased an existing concept and made it better by supporting the local community. We believe that you are only as strong as your community.

What do customers enjoy the most about your business?
We provide old-style service and get to know our customers by name so everyone feels welcomed.

What’s your most popular product, service, and or item, and when is the busiest time of the week usually?
Bagel with cream cheese and breakfast sandwiches are our most popular items. We also win business partner awards from the McKinney ISD each year for our support.

How do most customers discover you?
Customers find us by word of mouth and social media.

All of our Dallas-based business partners have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. While there is little any individual company can do to remove the challenging implications of the pandemic on their business, there is a lot that an individual company can do to sustain operations and continue to survive and thrive through this season.

The OTG team wants to thank Benny’s Bagels for their transparency and engagement. We asked about how COVID-19 has impacted their business and what they are doing as a result. Andrew talked a bit about how Benny’s Bagels is combating the challenges of COVID-19.

How has COVID-19 affected your business?
We have switched to takeout and delivery only. Before, we had lots of family dine-in business.

What changes have you made to your business in response to COVID-19?
We have started doing delivery service with DoorDash and Favor. In the past, we didn’t have a delivery service.

How has your physical to the digital portion of your business changed? Have you seen a significant increase in deliveries and or certain products being consumed?
Yes. We have relied more on digital media since the COVID-19 outbreak.

Has COVID-19 affected your marketing & advertising strategy? If yes, what new ways are you reaching locals now?
Yes. We rely more on digital marketing than in the past. We were one of the first restaurants to offer free breakfast to first responders and medical workers.
